eCity Technology - How it works



VN5 delivers exceptional range using pioneering eCity range-extender technology. It delivers a full day’s range with no range anxiety.

Our proven eCity technology is a range-extended electric vehicle drivetrain for commercial applications. The key characteristics of this technology means:

  • The vehicle is always electrically-driven, with propulsion provided exclusively by electricity - through the drive motor.
  • Electric energy is stored in the high voltage drive battery.
  • It is recharged via an external power source - plug-in chargers.
  • Crucially, the van is able to operate with zero tailpipe emissions.


    eCity technology means in VN5 the wheels are always driven by the electric motor, and the motor in turn is powered by a 31kwh battery.

    Running only on electric power, VN5’s pure EV range is over 60 miles* on a typical driving pattern, and this gives VN5 a pure electric range equivalent to many of today’s BEVs.

    But in addition, VN5 is equipped with a small petrol generator - commonly known as a range-extender - whose only function is to maintain the battery, providing substantial additional range.

    With the range-extender the total range is 304 miles, and this gives VN5 a total range equivalent to most Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles.

    This range provides the flexibility for van operators to use VN5 for both short inner city business, and longer intercity business, a flexibility no other electric van offers.

    The back-up range-extender can be activated if or when required, to completely eradicate the number one barrier to EV adoption, range-anxiety - the fear of running out of charge.

    eCity technology gives drivers the confidence to switch to an electric vehicle, without fear of lost earnings caused by unavailable or unreliable charging infrastructure. The total range of VN5 gives the ability to drive to the next job or charge point without fear of being left stranded.

These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle loads.
